Shapiro & Smith will dance BURNING AIR which tells of the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894. Ominous skies are again in front of our eyes as today’s fires foretell what’s to come in a world of continued inaction on climate change.

We are humbled to share the evening with two stellar companies: Alternative Motion Project empowers and connects communities through a wide range of highly physical, evocative, and collaborative contemporary dance forms. To preserve the tradition of Kathak and explore forward-thinking storytelling, Katha Dance Theatre presents its unparalleled repertory of this classical form of Indian dance.

What we’ve been up to:

CANDY BOX performances May 2022 / Southern Theater, MPLS MN

We had a blast participating in the annual CANDY BOX Dance Festival presented by Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES; an eclectic gathering of performances, workshops, and public showings. Our work, Ferdougnal, featured 20 local dance artists ranging in age from 22 - 65.

Re-Staging for Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company / AUGUST 2022:

Joanie Smith and Laura Selle Virtucio of Shapiro & Smith Dance staged “To Have and To Hold” on this fabulous company based in Salt Lake City, Utah!

Vermilion Community College Theater, Ely, MN / Spring 2022:

Shapiro & Smith Dance Company presented "BURNING AIR based on The Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 followed by a talk/discussion about the fire then and now and how this dance was created out of historical records and survivors’ stories.

S & S Dance has had the pleasure of working with Female Fightfighters during past residencies at Tofte Lake Center near Ely MN. We were thrilled to return as a part of Minnesota Arrowhead Events around the 10th Anniversary of the Pagami Creek Fire.

Virtual Re-staging Phoenix Dance Company:

Joanie Smith, with company artists Laura Selle Virtucio and Drew Lester, staged “Family” (via Zoom) with Phoenix Dance Theatre in Leeds for performances in Spring 2022.

In “Family”, ordinary passions, dramas, and tensions that define family life are transformed into an acrobatic spectacle. Originally debuted in 1992, this satirical fly-on-the-wall dance elegantly captures the complexity of human interaction.
